Water problems
Start with what you're seeing, tasting or smelling. These are the most common water problems in North Okanagan homes and what usually fixes them. A free water test confirms the cause.
Scale on fixtures, spots on glasses and dishes, bathtub rings, dry skin and dull laundry.
Dissolved calcium and magnesium, often with some iron. Most homes have it, on a private well or city water, and it shortens the life of water-using appliances.
Murky, cloudy or greyish water.
Dissolved or suspended solids, known as turbidity, from natural sources or land disturbance such as construction, storms and run-off. Clear-looking water can still carry a high level of dissolved solids, so test either way.
A pool smell, dry skin and hair, faded clothes.
Chlorine is essential at the treatment plant and in the pipes, but it's no longer needed once water reaches your home. It can also dry out the rubber seals in appliances.
Water that smells like rotten eggs, tastes earthy or musty, or tastes of metal.
A rotten egg smell is hydrogen sulphide, a corrosive gas that also attacks metal parts in appliances. Earthy tastes usually come from decayed vegetation and algae. A metallic taste points to dissolved metals.
Rusty orange or black stains on sinks, tubs, toilets, fixtures and clothes.
Water dissolves what it touches. Depending on where you live, that includes iron and manganese from the ground.
Blue-green stains on sinks, tubs, showers, toilets and white clothing.
A sign of low pH. Acidic water corrodes copper plumbing, and a neutralizing filter raises the pH.
Often no sign at all, or a lab test that finds coliform or E. coli.
Bacteria, viruses and protozoa reach the water supply in many ways, and even well-run treatment plants can't guarantee water is free of them. Private wells are most at risk.
