UV Purification for Vernon and North Okanagan Homes

A UV system treats all the water coming into your home against bacteria and viruses without adding chemicals. We test your water first, then size and install the system that suits it.

Is UV right for your water?

UV is the usual choice for homes on a private well and for cabins drawing from a lake or creek. It works best on clear water, so it is installed after a sediment filter.

How a UV system works

Diagram of a three-stage system: sediment filter, carbon filter and ultraviolet disinfection chamber

1. Sediment filter

Catches grit and particles that could shield bacteria from the light.

2. Carbon filter

Improves taste and odour. Combination systems include it in the same assembly.

3. UV chamber

Water flows past a UV lamp inside a quartz sleeve. The light damages the DNA of bacteria and viruses so they cannot reproduce. The controller lets you know when the lamp is due for a change.

UV questions

How often does the UV lamp need changing?

Most home UV lamps are rated for 9,000 hours, about a year of constant use. Some Trojan UVMax lamps last 18,000 hours. A lamp keeps glowing after that, but its output drops too low to treat water.

Do I need a filter before the UV system?

Yes. Sediment and cloudy water can shield bacteria from the light, so a sediment filter goes ahead of the UV chamber. Many of the systems we install come with the filter housing attached.

Does UV remove iron, hardness or chlorine?

No. UV treats bacteria and viruses only. Iron and hardness also coat the quartz sleeve, so we fit a filter or softener ahead of the UV system when your test shows them.
