Is softened water safe to drink?
Yes. A quart of softened water holds about 75 to 100 mg of sodium, less than the 120 mg in a slice of white bread. Softeners can run on potassium chloride instead of salt, and a reverse osmosis system gives you sodium-free drinking water.
Will a softener harm my septic system?
Research at the University of Wisconsin found softener regeneration water caused no problems in typical septic systems and did not interfere with drain field percolation. In fine soils it can improve it.
Do magnetic or salt-free devices soften water?
Not in the same way. Magnetic and electronic devices are descalers: they can reduce scale build-up, but the hardness stays in the water. A softener removes it.
